animated avatars

I have downloaded a couple of of these but can not get the animation to work.  Is there a setting that is in the smf pkg. for this.

The avatars should be in the .gif format to be animated. To display the animated avatars, selecting them in your profile should be enough to render the animation. Which sets did you download? I can see if they work on my test site if you'd like.

they were downloaded from another site and saved on my pc.  i put them on the forum but they would not work so i took them back off.  i can send them to you if you would like to try

i checked and they are all gif.  i downloaded them from avatarsdb.com

when uploaded on the server. It is being resized. after it is resized the ext change to pgn. No animation when uploaded and resized. If one chosses not to use the png format the avater resizes then grabs jpeg ext.

Grabbing just the url from your post and using it in the "Specify avatar by URL". The server resized it and keep the gif ext.

There are two ways you can achieve resized avatars while keeping the animation.

1) You can specify the URL as Frank pointed out. Once you find an avatar you like, save it and upload it to your server (keep it in an easy-to-reach folder such as www.yoursite.com/myavatars/). In your profile, for the avatar selection, choose Specify avatar by URL and then type the URL to the newly uploaded image (such as http://www.yoursite.com/myavatars/sheep.gif).

2) The other way (and my preferred method) is to save the gif to your computer, then use any graphics program, resize it to match the allowed avatar size on your site, and upload it to your folder. This method requires a bit more work and some basic knowledge of image manipulation, but gives better control over the end product.

For anyone else facing similar issues, this was resolved by setting avatar to be resized using javascript in the admin panel. Choosing this option, and then specifying the URL to an avatar, allowed the avatar to remain animated.
